Massage Etiquette

Updated: Oct 14

If you're like everyone else, you've had an awkward question or been confused or annoyed about something during massage. Here's a list of how to get the best massage possible. You are paying for it after all. I will be deep diving into many of these topics in future blog posts. For now, here's a list of the basics starting with the negatives.

Things you SHOULD NOT DO

  • Do not grab/touch the therapist. Keep your hands to yourself.

  • Do not stare at the therapist. You obviously can have your eyes open.

  • Do not touch yourself in private areas.

  • Do not ask for sexual favors.

  • Do not speak inappropriately.

  • Do not assume your therapist can read your mind.

  • Do not get a bad massage because you were afraid to ask for more/less pressure.

  • Do not lie about medical history. Massage is a medical treatment. It affects every part of your body, so treat it like such. You'll get better results. I promise!

  • Include your medications because certain medications are contraindicated for massage. If you are unsure talk to your doctor about getting a massage.

  • Do not worry about hairy legs, back, chest, armpits, etc. Body hair is natural.

  • Do not assume that the massage therapist is "interested" in you because you are naked on the massage table.

Things you SHOULD DO

  • communicate with your therapist about your goals/needs for the session or series of sessions! (and establish if you like to talk during the massage or not.)

  • fart/sneeze/cough/move your body. You are a human being. You can act like it.

  • visit the restroom before your session begins

  • scratch itches, move hair, adjust your body during the massage, or alert the massage therapist that you need to make adjustments to the face cradle, bolsters, etc.

  • breathe deeply. Sounds basic but this tip will get you 10x more out of your session.

  • stretch afterward!

  • use imagery to take you somewhere relaxing during a massage. a beach, forest, whatever.

  • Request specific music for your session!

  • Take off your bra/chest binder. No one is going to see your breasts and if you leave it on your massage isn't going to be nearly as relaxing as without it. (you can always take it off when you get to the table and keep it with you or ask for a modesty towel.)

  • take a minute after the massage therapist leaves the room and breathe deeply a few times to prepare for reentering the thinking world. Wiggle your fingers and toes and slowly open your eyes. Think of it like coming out of savasana.

Other things to expect after a massage

  • pain and soreness. It is common to experience very mild soreness and potentially some pain if you requested deep work. The therapist most likely did not injure you. A massage is sometimes like a workout. When you get muscles massaged that aren't used much or used improperly, the body sometimes responds with pain. Once your body gets used to massage, this will eventually go away. If you are experiencing pain for more than a day following, let your massage therapist know.

  • sleepiness. If you get tired easily, a nighttime massage where you have to drive afterwards is probably not a good idea.

  • Euphoria Benefit!  :)  This is the best part of a massage. enjoy it.
